Mr Michael Pritchard

Mr Michael Pritchard specialises in joint replacement, arthroscopic surgery and sports injuries. He currently operates at Calvary, St Johns Hospital in Hobart, Tasmania.

Mr Pritchard graduated from the University of Tasmania obtaining his MBBS (Hons), in 1998 and completed his Orthopaedic Training at The Royal Melbourne and Royal Hobart Hospitals.

He gained an inaugural postgraduate fellowship in Hip and Shoulder arthroscopy in 2007 with Mr John O’Donnell, working closely with many elite athletes.

He regularly attends workshops in Europe on advances in Hip Arthroscopy, and Direct Anterior Approach Hip Replacement techniques; thus enabling him to provide state of the art technology for his patients.

Mr Pritchard has continued to improve advanced arthroscopic techniques to diagnose and treat disorders of the hip and has developed imaging techniques used in complex high performance revision situations. He has rapidly increased the number of elite athletes travelling to Hobart from around Australia and overseas for arthroscopic treatment of the hip.

In late 2013, he travelled overseas to further enhance the techniques of DAA Hip Replacement. He has since set up a Visiting Surgeons Program & Surgical Skills Lab in conjunction with Calvary Healthcare Hobart and the Menzies Institute for Medical Research in Hobart.

These courses allow surgeons to view Mr Pritchard in the operating suites and participate in the Skills Lab.

Mr Pritchard has presented nationally and internationally on these subjects and has published papers in peer reviewed journals.

Mr Pritchard has personal experience with elite sport, having played hockey himself at national level. He relocated from Melbourne to Hobart with his wife and children to enjoy work and lifestyle.

He maintains a keen interest in many sporting endeavours and understands the goals of elite athletes. He enjoys motor sport, sailing, road cycling and fishing.
